In 1978, Robert Opel began promoting his own “Virtual Drummer” to be titled
National Pornographics. A week after hiring Fritscher to write him a kickoff story,
Opel arrived at Fritscher’s home and sat at the kitchen table with Robert Mapplethorpe
who laughed when Opel asked Fritscher to read the story aloud. When finally Fritscher
agreed, performance artist Opel astonished both Mapplethorpe and Fritscher when he
unzipped and stroked to the rhythms of the story. When the story and Opel ended,
Opel wrote Fritscher a check as Mapplethorpe muttered, “I thought I had to work hard
for the money.” Opel retorted: “You should see my rejection slips.”
